Thanksgiving is my second favorite holiday-second to my birthday, of course. (It’s a holiday to me!) But this year has a very different energy. Since Monday night, I have to admit to being pretty emotionally raw. But in an effort to create positive energy for my community, I want to honor the powerful spirit of Thanksgiving and of gratitude in general. So here goes, a brief, non-exhaustive list of things I'm thankful for this year.
I’m grateful for the power of art. That our community turned to it to make something that was unquestionably ugly into something that is beautiful and thoughtful. Something that showed our desire for healing in a way words cannot touch.
I’m grateful for the things people from this community are doing to help those who have suffered. Would we even know that each other cared so much if this hadn't happened?
I’m grateful for the prayers and for the people who came and are coming together to lead us to a change. This is so big. It can feel impossibly overwhelming sometimes. Like it is out of our hands. But it is so badly needed here and around the world.
I’m grateful for the opportunity to grow as a city and to inspire a nation. It would have been nice if it had been gentler. It would have been nice if it had happened without costing a life. But we are here, ready or not.
And I hope. I hope this inspires us to look. To look at how we treat people who are “other” than us; to see that “other” is a false image we create-we are all the same.
